The coffee machines produced by the KitchenAid brand, very much like other coffee makers, use so-called error codes to help you diagnose an issue and fix the appliance. The KitchenAid coffee makers vary in their structure and features, which is one of the reasons why they don’t actually use identical sets of error codes. If you don’t have the manual, you may check the list of the most typical error codes, as almost all the KitchenAid models follow the same error code format. If you’re still not sure whether you should tackle the problem on your own, call the brand’s Support Center.
The error codes 1 (ERR1), 2 (ERR2), and 3 (ERR3) are very common and are shared by the major part of the KitchenAid models. They suppose exactly the same troubleshooting scheme no matter what model you are using.
To start with, you need to reset the coffeemaker by pressing the “On/Off” button. Are you keeping the appliance in a very cool place? If so, take it to another place, closer to room temperature.
If the appliance is still displaying the fault code even though you’ve done both the actions suggested above, an issue with electronic controls is very likely. In this case, it makes sense to call the company’s customer center.
Can you see the error code 4 (“ERR4”) on the machine? This error code shows that the appliance is experiencing a mechanical issue (not an electronic one). Most likely, one of the buttons is jammed or you have been pressing it for longer than 10 seconds.
Before you actually tackle the problem, take the plug out of the socket. Now, firmly press each button. You need to repeat this more than once.
Insert the plug back in the socket. In many cases, the error code is still displayed after these actions. The manufacturer recommends repeating the actions once again and also making sure that the appliance is kept at room temperature. If, in spite of your efforts, the appliance is still displaying the code, call the company’s customer center.
If you suddenly see a ERR 2 code on your coffee maker’s display, try to clear it by disconnecting the unit from the mains and the reconnecting it. Once you do, run a brew cycle and monitor it for a few seconds. If there is no error, use your coffee maker in the usual fashion.
If the error is still there, most likely, the digital unit that activates the warming plate is bad. If it is covered by the Kitchenaid’s 1 Year hassle Free Warranty, address Kitchenaid Customer Service and see what you can do about it. Most likely, they will not recommend a repair, because it will be costly and not very effective.
Although the list of error codes is shared by most KitchenAid coffee machines, there are models that have a unique set of fault codes, for instance the KPCM100, which belongs to the Pro Line Series. In this case, it makes sense to consult the user manual for the specific model.
The KPCM100, for example, uses the error code 1 or 2 (displayed E1 or E2) to show that the coffee machine needs to be cleaned from the calcium deposits. To do this, you need to unplug the appliance and wait half a minute before plugging it in again. In this way, you reset the display. Now, check out the user’s manual for correct instructions concerning as to how to descale the appliance. If the error code is not displayed again, you’ve performed the task successfully.
In case of the error 3 (E3), the most common reasons are the button or switch that are jammed. Also, the error appears if the button or switch has been held longer than acceptable. To resolve the problem, perform the same actions as for the error 4 from the standard list of the KitchenAid error codes (above).
