What does Prime mean on a Keurig?

Before using the Keurig, the machine must be primed.

  1. Place a cup on the drip tray plate. Remove the lid from the water reservoir, then remove the water reservoir from the coffee brewer and fill with fresh, cool water. Place the reservoir back into the brewer and replace the lid.
  2. Press the power button. This will turn the brewer on, and a blue light will show in the water reservoir. “Prime” will flash on the display screen and the travel mug image will illuminate. Press the travel mug button. This will fill up the brewer and heat the water. Once the water is heated, the word “Ready” will display and the travel mug button will flash.
  3. Press the travel mug button. This will start the clean the brewer and fill your cup with hot water. This is only a one time process and will not need to be done again for the life of the brewer.

Keurig troubleshooting Prime

The Keurig Prime indicator means:
Your water reservoir is dirty
Your water filter and/or filter screen is dirty
The water reservoir is not seated properly in the base (if someone accidentally moves your brewer or bumps it, sometimes the water reservoir will not have a proper seal at the base)
The water reservoir lid is forming an airtight seal, preventing the brewer from siphoning in more water (try cracking the lid a bit if this is the case as I’ve had this problem several times)
The brew needle or K-cup brew head may be dirty and need to be cleaned.
